You do not need much equipment to keep your Sheltland Sheepdog looking and feeling his best, but the equipment you use should be good quality. Whenever is possible, invest in the best tools you can. Good equipment will give better results, last longer, and make grooming a lot easier.
Here’s the tools you will need, when grooming your Sheltie:
- Grooming table with nonslip mat
- Brush with flexible pins and without balls on the tips of the pins
- Slicker brush (for thicker parts of coat)
- Bristle brush
- Steel comb with rounded teeth, half-medium spacing, teeth 1 inch long
- Stripping stone
- Flea comb
- Scissors, stainless steel, blunt-tipped, straight
- Shears, stainless steel, curved, 7 inches
- Shears, stainless steel, straight, 7 inches
- Eye ointment to protect eyes during bath
- Nail trimmers, guillotine-type
- Nail grinder
- Styptic powder
- Spray bottle
- De-tangling spray
- Emollient shampoo (pH balanced for dog skin)
- Hair rinse developed for dogs
- Ear-cleaning solution (available from your veterinarian)
- Cotton-tipped swabs
- Cotton balls
- Washcloth
- Paper towels
- Hair dryer
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste developed for dogs
- Small portable vacuum for cleanup
- Plastic bags to discard hair
