Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Pajama Dutch Clip for Poodles

With the Pajama Dutch clip the Poodle’s feet, face, tail, stomach and neck are clipped the same as with the Dutch clip. The only difference is in the setting of the body pattern: There is no narrow clipped strip that runs from the base of the tail up the backbone to the neck, only a clipped band around the middle of the dog.

The Pajama Dutch also bears a resemblance to the New Yorker clip; on that style, however, the clipped band is much broader.

Follow these instructions to set the body pattern:

  1. Stand the Poodle with his hindquarters facing you. Use your comb to make a part completely around the hinpajama dutch clip for poodlesdquarters. Start about 1 inch in front of the hipbones on Toy Poodles, and from 1 to 2 inches on Miniatures or Standard Poodles. To assure total balance and proportion, these guidelines can be increased or decreased in accordance with the dog’s size. Be sure the part is even. Using a #10 blade (or #15 if you like a closer clip), clip forward from the part line and stop just before you reach the last rib. Keep clipping from the part line, over the loins, up to the last rib until you have made a wide clipped band around the middle of the Poodle. Be sure the clipped lines are straight and that there are no untidy hairs within the band you just clipped.
  2. Shape and finish the back legs and hindquarters with your shears as instructed in steps 12 and 13 for the Dutch clip. Remember that there should be a smooth flowing of lines from the shorter body coat into the longer leg hair.
When shaping the coat near the clipped band, comb it up and out, then scissor off any untidy hairs that fall over the pattern line. Use curved shears to bevel the hair at the pattern lines to soften any sharp edges.
  3. Comb the hair on the back, over the ribs, on the shoulders and chest up and out to fluff the coat. Scissor the jacket to the same length as the hindquarters, following the natural contours of the body.
  4. Shape and finish the front legs with your shears as instructed in steps 14 and 15 for the Dutch clip. As on the hindquarters, there should be a smooth flowing of the lines from the shorter body coat blending into the longer leg hair. Use curved shears to bevel the hair at the pattern lines to soften any sharp edges.
  5. Sit the Poodle on the grooming table, facing you. Comb the hair on the head upward and forward, and shape the topknot.
  6. Comb the ear feathering downward, then round the ends with your shears to remove any straggly hairs or excessive length for an overall balanced appearance.
