Here’s some advice on how to groom the coat of a Mastiff. The Mastiff’s coat is short and close-lying, but not too fine over the shoulders, the neck and the back. The color is apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, fawn or dark-fawn brindle. Muzzle, ears and nose are black.
MAINTENANCE: This breed needs regular brushing with a bristle brush and a hound glove to keep the coat in good condition. It also benefits from a good bath — if you can get the dog in it!
Procedure
Equipment needed: Hound glove and a bristle brush.
Breed tip: The Mastiff is renowned for its slobber, and you will need to pay this frequent attention.
- Thoroughly brush the coat to remove dead and molting hairs.
- Bathe the dog in a suitable, good-quality protein shampoo.
- While the coat is wet, groom the Mastiff with a hound glove to encourage the removal of dead hairs.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Use a coat-nourishing conditioner, and rinse well.
- Dry thoroughly with super-absorbent toweling.
- Remember to check the dog’s nails, ears and teeth.
- Give a final brush with a hound glove or bristle brush.
