The coat of a Komondor consists of long, coarse cords, which may be wavy or curly, with a softer undercoat. The hair tends to cling together like tassels to give the corded appearance. The color is always white, and the skin is gray, but pink skin is acceptable.
Maintenance of the Coat
If neglected, the coat forms into large, matted “plates”. The cords are strong and heavy, and felt-like to touch. For the show ring, the Komondor is presented as corded. Do a lot of research before taking on this breed.
Equipment needed: Scissors to trim the adult coat, particularly the feet.
- Check through the cords and separate those that are matted at the skin.
- Bathe the Komondor in a shampoo, made from pure, natural, therapeutic ingredients of tea tree and lavender. When choosing a suitable shampoo, make sure it has easy-cleaning capabilities and is soothing and calming to the skin.
- Rinse the coat thoroughly, being careful that no trace of shampoo is left in, as it will be very itchy for the dog.
- Squeeze the excess water from the coat with super absorbent towels.
- Air- or cage-dry.
- For pet dogs, the stomach can be clipped with Oster No. 4 for comfort and cleanliness, as can the anal area.
- Check the dog’s nails, ears and teeth.
- Finish by checking all the cords to separate any clogs next to the skin.
