How to Give Your Dog a Teddy Bear Cut

The Teddy Bear Cut reminds us of the classic, fluffy, stuffed toy featuring soft, rounded edges and a sweet and cuddly look.

  • Using the clippers with a medium or large attachment comb over a No. 30 blade, clip the body following the direction of the hair growth.
  • With the dog standing in his natural position, use the straight shears to trim the topline, holding the shears parallel to the floor to achieve a straight and level cut.
  • Keeping the dog’s tail up, use the curved shears to start blending the topline to the side of the legs, keeping the shears perpendicular to the floor to achieve a straight-looking leg.
  • With the same curved shears, follow the angulation of the back legs, using the bending points on the back of the knee as a point of reference to mark the shortest point and the front of the knee as the point where you will leave the longest hair when accentuating the curve.
  • Gently lift the back leg, comb the hair down, and trim the front of the back leg, smoothly connecting the outline of the leg with the rest of the body.
  • Go over all of your work with thinning shears to erase any marks left by the clippers or scissors.

Tools Needed:

  • Clippers
  • Medium or large attachment comb for the body
  • No. 10 blade for the sanitary clip
  • No. 30 blade for the attachment combs
  • Slicker brush
  • Thinning shears
  • Straight shears
  • Curved shears
  • Comb

Puppy Cut

Puppy cuts and Teddy Bear cuts are pretty much the same thing. This haircut is very popular because it is low maintenance and can be both glamorous and practical. Puppy cuts can vary between dog breeds, it can be the longer version of the adult cut.

This same cut can be used year-round by changing the length of the hair left on the body using a different blade or snap-on comb. It is also the perfect haircut for the “fashionista” who loves to wear clothes: It prevents the hair from getting matted and allows the clothes to fit better.

  • Start by trimming the sanitary and eye areas. Then, clip the dog’s body from the top of the neck to the base of the tail and down to the sides of the body.
  • To trim the neck area, locate the Adam’s apple and clip down following the direction the hair grows. Be aware of any cowlicks and pay close attention to the neck area, which has many folds and wrinkles. Remember to use your free hand to hold the skin taut while clipping these areas.
  • Before trimming the back legs, it is important to identify the bending points of the legs (backs and fronts of the knees). Cutting the hair shorter at the back of the knee and leaving it longer at the front will visually accentuate the dog’s natural angulation and make him look more elegant.
  • To trim the legs, trim around the feet, positioning the scissors at a 45-degree angle to give the feet a beveled effect.
  • Then blend the hair from the legs by combing the hair out and keeping the scissors perpendicular to the floor, trim the hair to the desired length.
  • Be aware that not all dogs have straight legs. Enhancing the indentations by leaving more hair will make the legs visually straight. Pull the leg forward and trim the excess hair.

Go over your work with thinning shears to create a smooth finish.

Tools Needed:

  • Clippers
  • No. 7F blade for the body
  • No. 10 blade for the sanitary clip
  • No. 30 blade for the pads
  • Medium, 1 inch (2,5 cm) snap-on attachment comb for the head
  • Thinning shears for blending
  • Straight shears for the outline
