Even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, brush your Schnauzer with a gentle slicker brush, one with flexible straight wire bristles attached to a rubber backing, praising your dog as you make your way through his fluffy puppy coat. Brushing not only eliminates mats, but also stimulates natural oils that keep the coat lustrous and skin healthy.

Gently but firmly make him stay still, either holding him in your lap or standing him on a table or counter top. Chewing on your fingers or the brush is a no-no; such behavior should be nipped in the bud.

Brush over his body a few times a week, beginning at the same point each time. Using such a routine, you are less likely to miss any areas. Begin at the bottom of a rear leg, brushing the hair up and out, one small section at a time. Sometimes called “line brushing,” this method involves working your way though the coat inch by inch, up the legs and back down again.

Be careful not to dig the metal bristles into your Schnauzer’s tender skin as you brush. This can create an abrasion called “slicker burn,” a painful irritation for your pet. Detangling spray can make your job easier if you mist the coat prior to brushing.

Carefully lifting each front leg, brush the armpit area, a favorite hiding spot for mats. Holding your Schnauzer’s two front paws in one hand, stand him up on his back feet, so you can brush his belly. On the head, carefully brush the eyebrows forward and do the same with the beard. It may help to hold half the beard in one hand while you brush the other half, but be careful not to pull too hard! Next, check your work with your comb, going over every inch of the dog’s body to make sure you got rid of all snarls and tangles.
