- Place a nonskid pad or towel in the bottom of your sink.
- Mix up a solution of shampoo and water. It will go a lot further that way.
- Adjust the water temperature so it would be comfortable for you to bathe in, or just a little cooler. Keep checking it throughout.
- If possible, use a hand-held sprayer.
- Carefully place your Dachshund in the sink, always holding him so he can’t jump out.
- Wet him down, starting behind his ears. Save his face for last.
- Tip: To prevent your Dachshund from doing a wet-dog shake, keep one hand around one ear.
- Pour or sponge the shampoo mixture onto him.
- Work shampoo into a lather.
- Rinse thoroughly, starting at the front and top and working toward the rear and bottom.
- Apply a small amount of creme rinse on smooth and long coats, but not wire coats.
- Rinse again.
- Carefully place him on the floor and let him shake.
- As soon as you let him go, he’ll start running and rolling, so be careful where you want him!
- Towel-dry him as much possible.
- On cold days, use a blow dryer to accelerate drying. This will take some practice, but most Dachshunds will enjoy the feel of warm (not hot) air on their bodies.
- Never place a dog in a closed crate with a hot dryer aimed inside and then leave him. Dogs have overheated and died that way.
