Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

How to Achieve Puppy Lion Clip for Your Poodle

Strictly, the “Puppy Lion” clip is different — the Scandinavian version of the “Puppy” clip accentuates the outlines slightly more. In Britain, this clip is seen frequently in the show ring. In the U.S., show Poodles must be clipped into the traditional “Lion” at the age of 12 months.

  • Clip the feet, face and tail, and groom and bathe the dog as for the Puppy” clip.
  • Clip the abdomen area.
  • Feel the body to ascertain the location of the last rib . For the uninitiated, it is a good
idea to put a narrow bandage around the dog at just below this point to distinguish an even line and to be sure the balance is right. (Roughly one-third is trimmed shorter while two-thirds is left for the mane.)
  • With the scissors held straight, cut upward along the edge of your line or bandage, from the near side, up one side, over the body and down the other side. This is more easily achieved when the dog is standing square with its rear end toward you. Remove your “guideline” bandage.
  • In the “Puppy Lion” clip (called “pajamas” by some) the back legs are trimmed with scissors as with the “Lamb” clip, but are left longer from the stifle down, and shaped over the hock with more accent on the rear angulations (to show, or to make the leg appear more angulated than it might be —clever trimming often scores more goals).
  • Once you are well practiced with scissors, and if you have a good eye for the artwork involved, you can use a picture of your favorite dog and copy the up-to-the-minute trimming or the fashion of the current time.
  • Flick the mane with the comb and allow the dog to shake and the hair to settle. Then, keeping the scissors level, scissor around, rather like skimming over the coat. The aim is to achieve a blend where the mane meets the shorter back hair to enhance the appearance of a well-defined neck.
  • Work around the mane, shaping the incline from the brisket up toward the ear.
  • Scissor the front legs to a tubular shape, accentuating where they join the mane at the elbow with a slight indent.
  • Scissor the tail like the “Lamb” clip.
