We see the flag tail style on such breeds as the Golden Retriever and Setters and on many mixed breeds. To present a well balanced, neat outline, the tail normally requires a bit of shaping. The outline of the tail is a flag. With some breeds, like the English Setter, the shape is a clearly defined triangle. On other breeds, like on the Golden Retriever, the shape is softer in outline.
The proper length is determined by trimming the tail tip even with the top of the hock. Once the length is established, then the shaping can start.
Make sure the long feathering is thoroughly brushed out, with the coat lying in the same direction. Hold the tail out level with the body and begin trimming off the longer coat that falls outside of the triangular shape, broader at the base, tapering to a point at the tip.
With some breeds, this overall shape will be more angular than others. Once the overall shape is established, soften the line to a more natural styling outline with thinning shears or by cutting small V-shaped nips into the coat with straight shears.
Once the shape has been established on the “flag”, turn your attention to the top line of the tail. If there is a bulge on the top of the tail close to the base, bulk thin the excess with thinning shears to make it lie flat. There should be a break in the longer furnishings at the base of the tail and the rear of the dog.
To form a clear but natural break at this point, lightly thin the bulk at the underside of the tail closest to the body. Less is more, so go easy with this trimming technique. When finished, the coat should look like it grew that way naturally.
Tips for Creating a Flag Tail
- The tail must be clean, properly fluffed and brushed out.
- To create the proper balanced look, the length of tail is trimmed to the length of the hock.
- For some owners, a long flowing tail on their pet is a thing of great pride.
