The coat is long, or semi-long. It is fairly harsh, dense and almost flat or slightly wavy. It is denser and more woolly on the rump and on the thighs. The hair on the muzzle is short, but it is longer on the face and cheeks. Acceptable coat colors include various shades of fawn, with or without black hairs, light to dark gray, blue merle, slate or brindle, black, or black and white. Large areas of white, black or tan are undesirable.

Equipment needed: Slicker brush or pin brush and a wide-toothed comb.

Breed tip: Never neglect underneath the feet-where the hair can form mats.

  • Brush through the entire coat with a slicker or pin brush.
  • Comb with a wide-toothed comb to remove dead hairs.
  • This breed should only be bathed if it is absolutely necessary, and certainly not on a regular basis. If bathing is vital, a natural-ingredient shampoo should be used, and make sure you rinse well.
  • Add conditioner to aid grooming.
  • Towel-dry, patting the coat rather than rubbing it.
  • Finish the drying process in warm air, a cage, or with a gentle blower.
  • Check the Pyrenean Sheepdog’s nails, ears and teeth. Also check the dewclaws and trim the rear ones if necessary to prevent them curling around.
  • Check underneath the feet for excess hair or clogged hair, and remove with small scissors if necessary.
  • Finally, complete by brushing the coat over with a bristle brush.
