Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Grooming Supplies to Use for a Brittany

Using the right tools to groom your Brittany will make the job a lot easier. You don’t need a lot of supplies, and you don’t need to purchase top-of-the-line quality for your pet, but we would recommend that you buy well-made products of reasonable quality.

They will work better and last longer, saving you money in the long run. If you buy good-quality tools and take care of them, most will last the life of your dog. Now let’s see what you need.

  • Electric clippers with  #10 blade (optional).
  • Flea comb, which has very closely spaced metal teeth designed to trap and remove fleas from the coat.
  • Nail clippers are essential for keeping your dog’s nails a healthy length. Clippers come in two main styles: the guillotine and the scissors. The guillotine-style clipper has an
opening which you slip over the nail and a blade that slides across the opening, cutting the nail from one side. A scissors-style clipper has two blades that cross in a scissors action, cutting the nail from both sides. Which style you use is matter of personal preference. Either way, check frequently to be sure the moving
parts are working properly and that the blades are sharp. Dull blades and misaligned or loose working parts can hurt your dog when you clip his nails.
  • Natural bristle brush for smoothing the coat.
  • Pin brush, which normally is a plastic or wooden handle with metal or plastic pins, sometimes with ball ends to protect the dog’s skin.
  • Scissors, ideally designed for cutting hair.
  • Shampoo. You’ll find all sorts of fancy schmancy dog shampoos on the shelves, but all you really need is a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. (People shampoos will dry out your dog’s skin and coat.) Your dog’s sense of smell is much more sensitive than yours, so don’t overpower him with strong fragrances. Avoid medicated and flea shampoos unless your vet advises you to use them.
  • Slicker brush, which is similar to a pin brush but with shorter metal pins usually set close together.
  • Smoothing tool to smooth nails. Emery boards made for acrylic nails are inexpensive and work well on canine nails. Many people prefer to use a portable electric-powered rotary mechanism equipped with a sandpaper drum to grind the nail instead of clipping or to smooth the edges after clipping. Dremel is a popular brand of this tool.
  • Styptic powder (or small bag of cornstarch) to stop bleeding if you cut a nail too short and it bleeds.
  • Thinning shears for thinning out thick
patches of thick fur and for trimming
without leaving distinct scissors lines. Both scissors and thinning sheers are available in any beauty supply store.
  • Tooth care products designed specifically for dogs, including toothpaste and a toothbrush or substitute tooth-cleaning device.

You may want to use a plastic box with a lid to keep your grooming supplies organized and easy to pack if you and your dog decide to hit the road.
