Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Grooming Details for a Tibetan Terrier

The Tibetan Terrier needs regular brushing and combing to keep it looking smart. Pet owners frequently have the coat trimmed back into the manageable length it was in puppyhood. This dog has a double coat, consisting of undercoat and topcoat. The undercoat is fine and woolly. The topcoat is profuse and fine, but not silky nor woolly; it is long, either straight or waved, but never curled.

Grooming Details

Equipment needed: Pin brush or slicker, and a wide-toothed comb.

Breed tip: When brushing the coat, lift and separate it in sections, and use a water or
grooming spray to aid the removal of dead hair.

  • Brush through the coat with a slicker, starting at the bottom of the back foot and working up in sections to remove dead and matting hair.
  • For neglected coats, a mat-breaker will be required to slice through the felts.
  • Work through the coat with a wide-toothed comb.
  • Regularly bathe the Tibetan Terrier in a protein or suitable shampoo.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all the shampoo and apply a quality conditioner to enhance the coat and to help prevent further tangles from forming.
  • Blow-dry the hair in sections, brushing through with a pin brush.
  • Check the Tibetan Terrier’s nails, ears and teeth.
  • Check under the feet, removing mats and excess hair with scissors, if necessary. However, leave the hair between the pads, because the hair here acts as protection for the pads.
  • The coat is groomed away from the parting on the spine and the tail comes forward over the back.
  • A pet dog can have its stomach, underarms and inside-thighs clipped with a No. 5 or No. 10 Oster, and the hair is trimmed around the anal area.
  • The Tibetan Terrier often comes into the salon with a request from owners to clip the entire coat off to a length of about  1 inch (2.5 cm).
