Grooming Tips for a Great Looking Dog!

Coat Care for Pekingese

Coat care for Pekingese requires some patience and devotion. The Pekingese’s coat is long and straight, and has a profuse mane extending beyond its shoulders, which forms a cape around the neck. The top coat is coarse, with a thick undercoat. Feathering on the ears is profuse, as on the legs and tail. All colors and markings are permissible.

MAINTENANCE: Brushing regularly is essential. On per dogs, it is often as well to clip underneath the stomach and upward to the chest, as well as around the genital area. This will not be seen unless the dog rolls over on its back, and will aid comfort, keeping it cooler and cleaner. Do not do this to show dogs, however.

PROCEDURE

Equipment needed: Slicker or pin brush, and a wide-toothed comb.
Breed tip: Wrinkles and folds in the skin must receive regular attention.

  • Brush through the entire coat, removing any tangles that may have formed, particularly underneath, with a slicker or a pin brush. Then work through the coat with a wide-toothed comb.
  • Bathe in a natural-ingredient shampoo, being vigilant about rinsing. Use a facecloth on the head, rather than spraying it with water.
  • Blow-dry the hair in sections.
  • Check the Peke’s nails, ears and teeth.
  • Also check under its feet for matted hair, and remove it with scissors.
  • Clean the dog’s eyes gently with a damp pad or cloth, and be sure that the folds or wrinkles on the face are free from moisture, drying this area carefully with cotton pads if necessary.
  • Treat the coat with a coat dressing and brush over to finish. The coat is brushed away from the parting along the back.
