Coat Care for an English Toy Spaniel

Slight waves are allowed, but the coat should never be curly. The legs, ears and tail are feathered profusely. Brush and comb your English Toy Spaniel every day, from early puppyhood.Colors:

  • Black and tan (rich, glossy black, with bright mahogany tan markings on the muzzle, legs, chest, linings of the ears, under the tail and spots over the eyes. White patches on the chest are undesirable).
  • Tricolor (ground color pearly white, with well-distributed black patches, and brilliant tan markings on the cheeks, linings of the ears, under the tail, and spots over the eyes. There is a white blaze between the eyes and up the forehead).
  • Blenheim (ground color pearly white, with well-distributed chestnut-red patches. There should be a wide, clear blaze, with a “spot” in the center of the skull — a clear chestnut-red mark about 3/4 inch (2 cm) across).
  • Ruby (whole-colored a rich chestnut-red. A white patch on the chest is highly undesirable).

Grooming Procedure

Equipment needed: A pin brush and a medium-toothed comb.
Breed tip: The coat should not be trimmed — any loose hair will be brushed or combed out easily if regular grooming is carried out.

  • Brush through the coat using a pin brush.
  • Comb through with a medium-toothed comb, making sure all tangles are removed.
  • Next, check the dog’s skin. If you notice dandruff, do not dismiss it as dry skin — a small mite could be responsible, which causes the skin to scale. If so, you will need a special veterinary-prescribed shampoo.
  • Now, bathe and shampoo the dog (a protein-enriched or tea tree and lavender shampoo work wonders) and rinse well.
  • Apply a complementary conditioner.
  • Blow-dry the hair, brushing in the direction of the hair growth, not against it.
  • Check the dog’s eyes. If necessary, wipe with cotton batting soaked in an eye-cleansing solution.
  • Check inside the dog’s ears to ensure they are clean and free of wax. If necessary, apply a light dusting of canker powder.
  • Check the nails and cut if necessary. Also check under the feet, and trim out any excess hair between the pads.
